5 Tips for Choosing the Right Santa Cruz Dentist

All dentists have gone to dental school, but that doesn’t mean that they are all the same. Different dentists may offer different services, so when you are looking for the right Santa Cruz dentist for you and your family, follow these five tips.

1.) Look at Who They Treat

When looking for the perfect Santa Cruz dentist for you, look at who the provider treats. This is especially important if you have kids or aging parents that you are caring for. It can be very inconvenient and time-consuming go to three different dentists: one for you, one for your child and one for your elderly parents. Many general dentists, however, treat patients of any age. They have the training to care for your child’s teeth as soon as they begin to erupt, and they have the ability to help elderly patients with their specialized concerns, such as dry mouth and tooth loss.

2.) Ask if They Offer Cosmetic Services

You don’t want to find a dentist who only offers cosmetic services or puts beauty before health, but it is a good idea to choose a dentist who does offer cosmetic services. A good general dentist focuses first on health but can also provide you with the cosmetic services you want to have a beautiful smile. A general dentist with the right training can give you the amazing smile that you want. For example, at Landmark Dental Group, you can get services such as veneers, crowns, tooth whitening and even dental implants without having to go see an expensive cosmetic dentist.

3.) Determine if You Will Need to See a Specialist

If you’ve ever needed more than a typical cleaning or filling, you may have been sent to a specialist. Many dentists don’t have the experience to provide certain services, such as root canal therapy, so they must send their patients to someone else. This means that you must go see a dentist that you don’t know and aren’t comfortable with, which can increase anxiety. However, some general dentists do have training in services such as root canal therapy, so you won’t have to go somewhere else.

4.) Inquire About Sedation Dentistry

Most people don’t love going to the dentist. The thought alone can cause stress levels to rise in many patients. Luckily, sedation dentistry is available. With inhalation, oral or IV conscious sedation, you can relax at your dental visit and forget much of the treatment. When looking for your perfect dentist, find out if they offer sedation dentistry, especially if you suffer from anxiety when going to the dentist.

5.) Check Their Education and Training

Having a dentist who can provide many types of treatments is great, but it’s important to find out if they actually have the education and training to provide those treatments. If your dentist offers dental implants, ensure they have taken continuing education courses in providing dental implants. Landmark Dental Group offers sedation dentistry, cosmetic procedures and root canals, but the doctors have taken courses in these services, so you know you can trust the procedures.

Your oral care is important, so don’t just choose a dentist without doing your research. Ensure they have the training and experience to provide most of what you and your family need. For more information, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

4 Benefits of Choosing a One-Stop Family Dentist in Santa Cruz

Different dentists specialize in different services, such as cosmetic or pediatric care. If you have one dentist for every different type of service your family needs, that can easily become a hassle. Instead, consider finding a family dentist in Santa Cruz who can see everyone in your family.

Here are four benefits of choosing one dentist for your entire family:

1.) Grouped Appointments

When it’s just you, making appointments is no sweat. However, when you have a family, it can be annoying if you have a dental cleaning one day, and your child has one the following day. This is a common problem when everyone in your family has a different dentist. However, if you choose a family dentist who can see everyone in your family, you can schedule your appointments together so that you only have to make one trip and only miss a little bit of work.

2.) Familiarity

Another benefit of having one family dentist for everyone in your family is that it allows you to become more familiar with your dentist, and for your dentist to become more familiar with your family. Your dentist can see you and your family throughout your entire lives, which means they’ll know your history. Another reason it’s great to be familiar with your dentist is that it promotes less stress. When you see a new dentist, it can be stressful because you don’t know what to expect, and they don’t know you. However, when you have a family dentist who knows you and your family, you’ll feel more comfortable because it’s familiar.

3.) Services You Need

Of course, a family dentist provides your family with all the services they need. For children, this means treating teeth just as they emerge, offering sealants, and educating parents on caring for their child’s teeth at home. For all patients, a family dentist provides typical services like cleanings, exams and fillings. Older patients have a lot more to worry about, such as dry mouth, missing teeth, etc. However, a family dentist also has the experience to help with these problems associated with advanced age, such as offering dentures. Some family dentists even provide more advanced services, such as extractions and root canal therapy, so you won’t have to go see a specialist you don’t know for treatment.

4.) Cosmetic Services

Sometimes, however, normal services like cleanings and fillings aren’t enough. This is especially the case with adult patients. As an adult, your bad habits as a child or genetics may have given you a smile that you don’t love. Thanks to cosmetic dentistry, there’s a procedure to fix just about any problem you have. You don’t necessarily have to find a new dentist for these procedures. Many family dentists have training and experience in providing many cosmetic services, such as veneers, bridges and dental implants.

You don’t need to see a handful of different dentists and make a dozen different appointments for your family. When you choose a family dentist in Santa Cruz that offers many services for the entire family, you get one-stop satisfaction. For more information, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

5 Answers to Important Family Dentistry Questions

5 Answers to Important Family Dentistry Questions

photo credit: WavebreakMediaMicro | Adobe Stock

There are a lot of different types of dentists out there. Do you know which one is right for your family? The answer is easy: a family dentist. Family dentists are excellent options because they treat patients of different ages and across the wide spectrum of dental health. If you would like to know more about family dentistry, check out these five questions and answers just below.

1.) Why Choose a Provider Who Offers Family Dentistry?

You can find dentists who focus in just about everything: pediatrics, geriatrics, cosmetics, etc., but do you really want to drive all over town to a dozen different dentists for your entire family? Although sometimes it’s necessary to see a specialist for a major complication, for most treatments a family dentist can treat your entire family. They offer services for children, teens, adults and the elderly. Some can even provide great cosmetic services, such as porcelain veneers and dental implants.

2.) What Makes a Good Family Dentist?

A good family dentist has the ability to treat patients at any age. From young children who have just gotten their first tooth to elderly patients who struggle with mobility, a good family dentist can treat them for most issues. However, a good family dentist also has the training and experience to provide all these services. For example, if your family dentist offers root canal therapy, make sure they have continuing education that specializes in root canal therapy.

3.) How Can a Family Dentist Help Children?

One of the most important jobs a family dentistry provider has is helping children. Childhood is an important time when it comes to oral health because this is where it all begins. Taking good care of your child’s primary teeth leads to healthier permanent teeth. Plus, the habits children learn at a young age stick for life. A good family dentist can help children by ensuring primary teeth are healthy, educating children about their oral health — and looking for potential future problems. The dentist can also teach you about how to help your child care for their smile at home.

4.) How Can a Family Dentist Help Geriatric Patients?

Geriatric patients may struggle with more oral concerns than younger adults. Sometimes, it’s due to a lifetime of poor oral hygiene, other times it’s just normal aging and typical wear and tear from a long life. Whatever the cause, a family dentist can treat elderly patients and help them deal with many problems. Common issues geriatric patients face include dry mouth, gum disease and missing teeth. Plus, elderly patients often have other medical conditions that may affect their oral health. Family dentists can treat these problems, so elderly patients can have a better quality of life.

5.) Do Family Dentists Provide Cosmetic Services?

You don’t have to go see an expensive cosmetic dental specialist to get great cosmetic procedures because many family dentists also offer cosmetic treatments. With the growing demand for beautiful smiles, cosmetic dentistry has become a staple of the field, so even dentists who don’t specialize in it need to have some experience to compete. Many dentists attend continuing education classes teaching cosmetic dentistry procedures, so that they can craft gorgeous smiles for their patients while also providing preventative care to keep teeth healthy.

Choosing a dentist who offers family dentistry services is an excellent option. You can have your entire family treated at one location, and they can help with preventative care, restorative care and cosmetic care. Excellent Family Dentists in Santa Cruz

If you’re looking for good family dentists in the Santa Cruz area, look no further than the doctors at Landmark Dental Group. Landmark offers a robust selection of services and procedures for the young, old and everyone in between. Whether you’re just trying to protect your child’s first teeth or wanting to improve the look of your smile, Landmark Dental Group has the services to meet your needs.

Dental Services for Children

Landmark Dental Group welcomes children and encourages parents to bring their children in for regular checkups and cleanings. Even though primary teeth are temporary, they play an important role in your child’s lifetime oral health. Primary teeth are place holders for permanent teeth. It’s important to care for them properly so that permanent teeth come in healthy and strong. Plus, teaching your child healthy oral habits at a young age will make it easier for them to stick with them when they are older. Landmark’s dentists will help educate you about your child’s growing smile and offer services to help protect your child’s teeth, such as dental sealants.

Dental Services for the Elderly

Landmark Dental Group also offers specialized services for elderly patients. Just like elderly patients often require a little more medical care than younger patients, their mouths require a little more attention too. A lifetime of using their teeth and normal aging can cause problems, such as gum disease, gum recession, dry mouth, root decay and missing teeth. However, Landmark’s assistance doesn’t end there. Elderly patients often also have other medical problems or take many medications. The dentists at Landmark Dental have the experience to help treat these patients and explain how their co-existing medical conditions and medications can affect their oral health.

Preventative and Restorative Care

Everyone can benefit from preventative care regardless of age, because it is the most important step in creating and keeping a healthy smile. Landmark’s family dentists provide all the preventative services you need to ensure your mouth is strong. Regular examinations, regular cleanings and scaling and root planing are available. However, if you already have a problem, such as a cavity, Landmark family dentists can treat the cavity and even use tooth-colored fillings, so it won’t look as if you had anything done. Extractions and root canal treatments are also available for infections or severely damaged teeth.

Cosmetic Procedures

Unfortunately, sometimes you don’t have the smile you want. Genetics, normal wear and tear or bad oral hygiene may mean your teeth are crooked, stained or damaged. However, at Landmark Dental, you can get the smile you’ve always wanted because the dentists have extensive education in cosmetic and esthetic dentistry. Tooth whitening will get your teeth bright white. If you have some crookedness, unevenness, gapping or chips, dental veneers can be an excellent option. For weak teeth, porcelain dental crowns can strengthen teeth and leave them looking great. Last, if you have missing teeth, Landmark Dental Group offers dentures, dental bridges and even dental implants.

Choosing good family dentists is an important part of your oral health, and Landmark Dental Group’s dentists treat patients of any age. Plus, they can fix many problems, from a simple cavity to a missing tooth. For more information, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

A General Dentist Office in Santa Cruz With a Lot to Offer

A General Dentist Office in Santa Cruz

When choosing your general dentist, you want someone who has a lot to offer. Nobody wants to have to go to another dentist for services that aren’t offered by their general dentist. At Landmark Dental Group, you don’t have to worry about being sent to other dentists for treatments that you need because they offer a robust spectrum of services for young and old alike.

Pediatric Services

Children require special treatment because childhood is an important time. When you begin good oral habits and care early, you are more likely to continue them throughout life, ensuring you have a beautiful, healthy smile. Landmark offers children’s services, such as sealants, and they help educate kids and parents about how to keep smiles healthy.

Geriatric Services

The elderly also require specialized services. They suffer from many oral ailments as a result of advanced age. Landmark can help geriatric patients who suffer from dry mouth, gum recession and other problems that are associated with older age. They even have the experience to treat patients with co-existing medical problems, multiple medications and mobility issues.

Preventative and Minor Restorative Services

Of course, one thing that every general dentist should be able to provide are preventative services, such as cleanings, exams, X-rays and scaling and root planing. It’s important to keep up on your oral preventative care so that you don’t develop major problems that are painful and expensive to fix. If you do develop a minor problem, such as a cavity, Landmark also offers restorative services, such as tooth-colored fillings.

Root Canal Therapy

Whether from trauma or poor oral hygiene, one of your teeth may develop an infection. Tooth abscesses can be incredibly painful, and they must be treated to prevent them from spreading. Root canal therapy is a common way to treat tooth infections without the need to extract the tooth. Your dentist will remove the infection and tooth pulp and put a crown on it. Even without the pulp, your tooth will function properly.

Extractions and Tooth Replacement

Sometimes, you can’t avoid a tooth extraction. For example, if your tooth has severe decay and breaks at the gum line, an extraction may be the best option, and Landmark Dental Group offers extraction services. However, more importantly, they offer tooth replacement options, so you don’t have to suffer with the difficulties or embarrassment of a missing tooth. Tooth replacement services include dentures, dental bridges and dental implants.

Veneers and Dental Crowns

Porcelain veneers are an extremely popular cosmetic dental procedure because they do a fabulous job of making your front teeth look flawless. Whether you have some crowding, gapping, chips or uneven teeth, veneers can help. If your teeth are weak from a root canal treatment, big fillings, etc., veneers may not be a good option. Landmark Dental, however, offers porcelain dental crowns. They can make your teeth look amazing, and they strengthen weak teeth, as well.

Tooth Whitening

Another popular cosmetic dental procedure is tooth whitening. Landmark Dental Group offers at-home whitening, which is more effective than over-the-counter products and cheaper than in-office whitening. Your results will depend on how long you wear the trays and how well your teeth absorb the whitening agent, but your dentist will help you reach your desired shade.

Don’t choose a general dentist that only offers a handful of services. A good general dentist can provide most or all of the services you and your family might need. From routine cleanings to dental implants, Landmark Dental has all the services you need. For more information, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

Going to the dentist is an important part of your health and well-being, but it can be difficult to find the right dentist for you and your family’s needs. Landmark Dental Group, a Santa Cruz dental office, is an excellent choice to consider.

Patients Range from Kids to the Elderly

Landmark Dental Group is perfect for the entire family because we accept patients of all ages. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends taking your child for their first dental exam when their first tooth appears, so even if your child is six months old, bring them in. The doctors and staff will help educate you on healthy tips for your child’s oral health.

We also have services specifically for geriatric patients. Older patients have to deal with different oral problems, but Landmark Dental has the skills to help. Dental issues that we can help with include gum disease, gum recession, dry mouth, root caries, missing teeth and ill-fitting dentures. Plus, we understand that many elderly patients have co-existing medical problems or may take several medications that could potentially affect their oral health.

A Wide Range of Services to Keep Your Mouth Healthy

The number one goal of dental care is to keep your teeth and gums happy and healthy. To do this, we offer a wide range of preventative and restorative dental services. Common services include regular cleanings/examinations, scaling and root planing, dental sealants, fillings, extractions and root canal therapy.

If you’re nervous about getting any work done, we here at Landmark can also provide sedation dentistry. You can choose inhalation, oral or IV conscious sedation to help make your entire trip to the dentist smooth. For inhalation sedation, you’ll be able to drive yourself home, but for oral and IV conscious sedation, you’ll need a ride.

Many Cosmetic Dental Procedures Offered

Sometimes, just keeping your mouth healthy isn’t enough. There are many cosmetic procedures that can give you that gorgeous smile you desire, and we offer many of these services. Cosmetic services include tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, porcelain bridges and dentures.

Perhaps one of the most exciting services offered at Landmark, however, is dental implants. Dental implants are the most ideal way to replace missing teeth. Instead of having to see another specialist for these services, Landmark Dental Group can do it for you.

Exceptional Experience and Skill

Perhaps one of the best reasons to choose Landmark Dental is because of the doctors. Trang K Tran, DDS is an exceptional Santa Cruz dentist. With a degree and honors from the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry, Dr. Tran continues to take courses, especially focusing on esthetic dentistry and root canal therapy.

Scott J Weston, DDS, is the other Santa Cruz dentist at Landmark Dental Group. He is another fantastic member of the team. Dr. Weston also earned his degree from the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry. While there, he earned the Francis A Sooy Award for Outstanding Dental Professional. Landmark Dental Group: A Family Dental Practice in Santa Cruz

family dentist santa cruz

Dr. Scott J. Weston, DDS & Dr. Trang K. Tran, DDS

If you’ve been looking for an excellent family dental practice in Santa Cruz, consider visiting Landmark Dental Group. Whatever your age and whether you’re looking to prevent cavities or replace a missing tooth, Landmark Dental can help.

Please see below for more information about the individual services offered by Landmark Dental.

Pediatrics Services

Your child won’t have their primary teeth for long, but that doesn’t mean they should be neglected. Taking good care of your child’s teeth from an early age promotes good dental habits for life, and promotes healthy adult teeth. At Landmark Dental Group, you’ll find a wide range of services for younger patients, such as dental sealants. The staff at Landmark Dental is there to help educate you regarding your child’s oral health. Whether you have questions regarding bottle feeding, normal tooth development and eruption, habits like thumb sucking or anything in between, the knowledgeable doctors and staff can help.

Geriatrics Services

Children aren’t the only ones who often require specialized services. Oftentimes, elderly patients struggle with many dental concerns that become more common as you age. Elderly patients may struggle with gum disease, gum recession, root decay and dry mouth — the increased risks for these caused by many common medications. As a result of these issues, many elderly patients suffer from missing teeth, which can make it difficult to eat and speak. Landmark provides denture services (including implant-supported dentures) to replace missing teeth.

Preventative and Restorative Procedures

A hallmark of any good family dental practice is that it offers excellent preventative and restorative procedures. To help prevent oral issues, Dr. Trang K Tran, DDS and Dr. Scott J Weston, DDS at Landmark offer regular cleanings/examinations, and the friendly staff will help to educate you on proper at-home cleaning and care techniques. If plaque and tartar are found below the gum line, scaling and root planing is also available. Restorative procedures include fillings, extractions, crowns and root canal therapy.

Cosmetic Procedures

If you have cosmetic dental concerns, such as stained teeth, Landmark Dental Group offers esthetic-related services, too. Both Dr. Tran and Dr. Weston have continued their education with courses in cosmetic dentistry to better position themselves to give patients beautiful smiles. Tooth whitening is available for patients who want a brighter, whiter smile. If your front teeth are a little crooked, have minor gaps or have chips/cracks, porcelain veneers can provide an almost flawless smile. Porcelain crowns or veneers can help protect weaker teeth and make them look beautiful. Lastly, if you have missing teeth, Landmark offers dentures, porcelain dental bridges and dental implants.

Sedation Dentistry

It’s a fact that many people have fears about going to the dentist. Landmark Dental can help by providing Sedation Dentistry. For minimal sedation, try inhalation sedation. You’ll be relaxed during the procedure, but once the nitrous oxide is removed, you’ll be back to normal. For minimal-to-moderate sedation, try oral sedation. It’s a pill that should be taken about an hour before the procedure. It causes drowsiness, so you’ll need someone to drive you home. For moderate sedation, IV conscious sedation is another option. A sedative is injected intravenously. Again, you’ll need a ride home after the procedure because you will feel some drowsiness.

Landmark Dental Group is a great family dental practice in Santa Cruz. They offer services for the entire family, including kids and the elderly. Plus, their skilled doctors can provide many quality cosmetic dental procedures. For more information about Landmark Dental Group, contact them today.

General Dentistry Tip: The Importance of Flossing

Woman flossing her teeth

Keeping your smile healthy starts with good at-home cleanings that happen on a daily basis. One commonly ignored aspect of general dentistry, however, is flossing. Flossing your teeth is extremely important because only floss can clean those hard to reach areas between your teeth. If you haven’t been flossing or don’t see any reason to floss, check out these important facts.

Flossing Removes Plaque

The reason that flossing is so important is because it gets rid of the plaque that hides between your teeth. Your toothbrush bristles can’t usually reach these tight places, and when you don’t floss, it allows that plaque to harden and to form tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. Even if you have routine cleanings (but especially if you skip those, too), the bacteria contained in tartar and plaque can eat away at your tooth enamel until it causes decay or a cavity.

Clean Gums Help Prevent Gum Disease

It’s not just your teeth that can fall victim to plaque and tartar. When you don’t clean between your teeth, the tartar also irritates your gums. If left untreated, it can cause your gums to become inflamed, irritated and infected: a condition known as gum disease. Advanced gum disease can lead to severe tooth loss and gum recession, which drastically impacts the health of your smile. So, do you want to spend a few minutes a day flossing, or do you want to suffer with bloody gums and loose teeth if you do develop gum disease?

It May Help Prevent Other Diseases

General dentistry basics, such as flossing, don’t just affect your oral health; the bacteria that collects on your teeth when you don’t floss isn’t just bad for your mouth. Research has proven that the bacteria in your mouth can affect the rest of your body, increasing your chances of heart disease, diabetes and respiratory problems. So, when you skip flossing, you’re not just putting yourself at risk for a little cavity, you may be putting your heart at risk too.

It Doesn’t Really Matter When You Floss

You may hear people argue that it’s best to floss after a meal, and other people say it’s best to floss before the meal. The truth is, however, that it really doesn’t matter when you floss. The most important thing is that you floss well. Taking thirty seconds to quickly flick the floss between a few teeth isn’t enough. You need to take a few minutes, so you can actually clean every bit of food and bacteria between your teeth. Another thing that doesn’t really matter is what type of floss you use. Whether you use traditional floss, flossers, waxed floss, thick floss, etc., just make sure to use them correctly.

Don’t neglect your teeth and gums by skipping flossing. Just like brushing and routine professional cleanings help keep your mouth healthy, so does flossing. If you would like more information about how to properly floss or you just want additional general dentistry tips that can keep your mouth happy, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

Happy National Brush Day!

IMG_9214

The day after Halloween is National Brush Day – a reminder to practice good oral hygiene by brushing for 2 minutes, 2 times a day.

Here are some tips for cleaning off all that sticky, sweet plaque from yesterday’s loot:

  • Use an appropriately sized, soft-bristled brush that can fit all the nooks and crannies in your mouth
  • Angle the toothbrush bristles at 45-degrees to the gums and move in small back-and-forth strokes
  • Clean the cheek-side, tongue-side, and chewing surfaces of all teeth.  Tip: to clean that hard-to-reach inside surface of the lower front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and brush using up and down strokes.
  • Clean in between teeth (where the brush bristles can’t reach) with floss
  • Brush with a fluoride-containing toothpaste
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkup exams

So keep enjoying the sweet spoils from last night’s festivities, but remember to brush and floss in order to avoid getting tooth decay.
